Cavener News

Bryan and I previously have documented nothing. From the last nine years we have no photos, no journals, nada. But now we're turning over a new leaf and we're hoping to use this as baby books for Jill and Peter.

A Cry for Help

Inspired by the DeLucas and Grandma Cavener (ahem), Bryan and I decided to try cold turkey potty training yesterday.  After Jill spent three hours in big girl underpants and had four tinkle accidents, Bryan and I were having whisper fights in the kitchen about how this was supposed to go.

Last night we kissed, made up, and laughed at ourselves.  We are approaching today as a unified team with a good sense of humor.  As a result, Jill has gained a real mastery of pooping and peeing in her big girl underpants.  Groan.  She has sat on the potty three times and has produced about a mL of tinkles.  We keep encouraging her to sit on the potty, and she will with some slight protesting, and then usually has an accident shortly thereafter.  We've got a sticker chart going and we praise her and give her a sticker when she sits on the potty.  We treat accidents as no big deal, clean her up, and say, "Did you feel the tinkles coming out?  Next time let's try sitting on the potty!"

Obviously, if potty training was as easy as taking off the diapers there wouldn't be so many books and videos about it.  It's been about a year since Jill went two weeks doing all BMs on the potty.  Now and then she asks to use the potty with success.  She isn't the least bit intimidated by the potty, but she doesn't seem to recognize when she has to go number one.

We're going to try this for the rest of the weekend and then take a break for a while if the situation doesn't improve.  Any help?

Latest update.  I just did a high spirited demonstration of a puppy dog using the potty with all the steps involved, culminating with him getting a sticker on the chart.  Jill loved it!  She laughed and smiled, and skipped to the sticker chart.  Then when I asked if she wanted to use the potty she said, "No.  You can do it, but I can't do it.  I'm just a little girl."  Talk about high level reasoning skills.  Five minutes later her pants were wet again.  I may have to give this up as a battle of the wills.

We lasted only a couple of days doing it cold turkey with Payton. I couldn't take the accidents honestly! Then we were very good about getting her on the potty as often as we could with m&m's as a reward and a sticker chart she caught on pretty quickly. Soon after she was refusing to wear her pull up at night and waking up dry as well!

Day three was the worst... it definitely went up hill from there. You just have to find THE thing that she really really wants. For Matt, it was trains and cars. For Jill it seems to be m&m's, and Pez Candy. To get her to sit on the potty for long periods of time, it's been a combination of pedicures, watching Dora podcasts on my iTouch, and reading lots and lots of books together. Stay with it, she'll get it. :)

Thank you for the blog. We needed a good laugh after a grueling trip on the road and withdrawal from family. Hang in there - we love you all.

Love, Grammie & 'Pa
