Conversations
Jill during her bedtime curtain call, "Mom, I can't keep my eyes shut and I keep rolling around in my bed. Can you help my brain think of something to think about?"
When Jill can't sleep, I give her a choice of three happy memories to picture with her eyes closed. So I tucked her back in, and gave her her choices. "You can think of going to the beach with Jacqui and Anna, watching the fireworks from the car last week, or of catching the same fish as Calvin at Vacation Bible School." (They were play fishing with toy lines; she and a friend snagged the same fish and "just laughed and laughed!")
Jill gave me a great big smile and chose the fishing memory. I told her to close her eyes and think of it and think of her VBS songs, too. They must have really laughed about that fish, because I can't imagine her being much happier than she was last week watching the Hampton Beach fireworks. Peter, on the other hand, said, "Those fireworks scare me, Mom!"
Also, in contrast, here is a conversation I had with Peter tonight. We had lasagna and salad for dinner. The sight of lettuce as I fixed our plates enraged him. "I DON'T WANT lettuce! It's yucky! I spit it out!" This a direct quote and indicative of how this child talks. He links together multiple sentences which is pretty shocking when you see the words coming out of his baby-face. And I love how he could tell me in advance just what he was going to do with his salad. Spitting out his dinner was premeditated. Classic.
