Cavener News

Bryan and I previously have documented nothing. From the last nine years we have no photos, no journals, nada. But now we're turning over a new leaf and we're hoping to use this as baby books for Jill and Peter.

A Very Long Conversation about Leprechauns

Happy St Patrick's Day! We celebrated the holiday by dressing in green and spending an incredible amount of time talking about leprechauns.

During a 25 minute drive home tonight I was peppered with questions about leprechauns. Jill was enthralled with the idea of catching a leprechaun and earning his pot of gold and she wanted to know the legalities of the deal.

Here is an excerpt:

Jill: What if I catch a leprechaun and he won't tell me where his pot of gold is?
Me: Um, I think he has to tell you, if you catch him.
Jill: But what if he won't?!
Me: Gosh, Jill, I really don't know that much about it.
Jill: Will you help me catch a leprechaun if we see one?
Me: Sure.
Jill: I'll run after him and you carry Peter, because he can't run that fast. Then you wrap your arms around him so he can't get away. I'll ask him where his gold is.
Peter: I'll catch the leprechaun, too!
Me: Peter, you can tickle the leprechaun until he tells us where the gold is.
Peter: Yeah!
Jill in horror: What if the leprechaun tries to catch US?!
Me: He wouldn't do that because we don't have any gold.
Jill: But he has gold?
Me: Right, and if we catch him he has to tell us where it is.

How did I end up arguing the case for chasing leprechauns? Man, these kids crack me up.

Payton's class had a project due this week... a leprechaun trap. My engineer and daughter whipped up this elaborate thing that was too big for her to carry to school. Brian had to drop it off! And yesterday morning her kindergarten classroom was chaos with glitter and green coins... out of 19 traps not one caught the elusive leprechaun:)

Those leprechauns sure are tricky! If Payton and Brian can't catch a leprechaun, who can?

You should post a picture of that trap. I'd love to show it to Jill. :)

As it turns out, all the Caveners had to do was ask the Florida State basketball team how to catch a leprechaun. They were experts ... :(
