Cavener News

Bryan and I previously have documented nothing. From the last nine years we have no photos, no journals, nada. But now we're turning over a new leaf and we're hoping to use this as baby books for Jill and Peter.

A Couple of Things

Of course these don't do justice to the many wonderful things I failed to write down, but here's something anyway.

The Jill Stories...

Today we had dinner with Grammie and Pa on the back porch.  Jill grumbled a little at first about eating outside but then we started a game where we imagined we were eating at a wonderful restaurant, enjoying a nice breeze and surrounded by trees.  Jill surveyed our plates and said, "Isn't it funny that we all ordered the same thing?"  She's clever!

I had lunch with a colleague today who reminded me of a great Jill story from this winter.  We had had a long day of errands and ended up at the grocery store at dinner time.  Bryan, Jill, and Peter decided to have a sandwich from the deli case at the store's little cafe.  Jill selected the egg salad, and I tried to dissuade her.  "I don't know, honey.  That might not taste so good."  Jill was adamant, "Please, Mom, I want it."  So I thought, why let my store-bought egg salad prejudice dictate her meal?  And I relented.

About 15 minutes later, Jill was doubled over, holding her stomach and claiming she couldn't walk.  Attack of the egg salad!  Who could have predicted THIS?!!  I used our coats to make a bed for her in an empty shopping cart and trailed Bryan and Peter who did the actual shopping.

My colleague had been working many late hours on a proposal and eating some questionable food.  She said every time she ate from a vending machine or Mobil on the run, she thought of Jill and laughed.  I love it.  I would have forgotten that story if not for Jackie.  And even now, the image of that egg salad artfully squirted in a hot dog bun is cracking me up.

The Peter Stories...

I say, "Peter, why are you so funny?"  He says, "It's because of my funny attitude."

Today at swim lessons, Peter's teacher asked each of the preschoolers on the edge of the pool to name and sing their favorite song before jumping in.  I moved to the edge of my seat, knowing what was coming.  Peter sang, "Life is a Highway" and brought down the house.  I wish I had taped it.
